Learning Objectives:

The primary objective of "Feelings Need Check Ups Too" is to equip practitioners with the skills and knowledge that will allow them to intervene effectively in minimizing impairment in children experiencing emotional distress related to 9/11 and other catastrophic events. At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Better assist children and families with crisis-related mental health problems
  • Recognize when the use of various screening tools may be helpful
  • Recognize the varying presentations of children exposed to trauma
  • Assess the contextual and cultural aspects of the clinical encounter
  • Begin to appreciate treatment options available for mental health issues in children
  • Begin to appreciate appropriate use of mental health referrals
  • Address other needs of children and families, including parental reassurance and bereavement support
  • Appreciate the importance of using evidence-based interventions

ACCREDITATION

The American Academy of Pediatrics is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical
Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American Academy of Pediatrics designates this educational activity for a maximum of 4 category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he or she actually spent in the activity.

This activity is acceptable for up to 4 AAP credits. These credits can be applied toward the AAP CME/CPD Award available to Fellows and Candidate Fellows of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CREDIT

During the period from September 2004 through September 2007 participants must:

  • Read the learning objectives
  • Study the educational activity
  • Complete and submit the evaluation form and physician certificate
